Weekend Visitor

DE Joe Mathis

Mathis is a complete beast. He is a 4* DE out of Upland, California who stands 6’4” and 254 pounds. Rivals ranks him 9th at his position and 93th in the nation. Check out this offer sheet: Michigan, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and USC. There’s really no elite school missing from his list. Mathis took home defensive MVP honors last weekend at the Nike training camp in California (where he met 2013 DL commit Taco Charlton, who Mathis called, “a monster.”). As a junior, Mathis had 80 tackles, 8 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Mathis is very interested in Michigan and its tradition and will be visiting this Friday before he heads to the Adidas Invitational in Detroit on Saturday (formally the Best of the Midwest). He says he wants some new competition. This is actually fantastic news because he’ll get to meet the coaches and see the campus on Friday, then he’ll get to hang out with half of our 2013 commits on Saturday because many of them are also attending the Adidas Invitational (QB Shane Morris, TE Khalid Hill, CB Jourdan Lewis, OL David Dawson, and RB Wyatt Shallman). Should be really good news for Wolverine Nation. Shall I keep the good news rolling? Joe Mathis just happens to be the cousin of 5* safety Su’a Cravens, arguably the top prospect of the 2013 class. They plan on taking their official visits together to Ann Arbor.

  1. Do you think Mathis' decision has any impact on Cravens?

  2. Definitely. I don't think they necessarily wanna go to school together, but if Mathis is THAT impressed with Michigan, Cravens will look at us seriously. If Mathis leaves unimpressed, that will impact Cravens too. I doubt that would happen though. How can he not leave impressed?
